Cairns buyers have the same basic choice as anyone else: take the finance the dealer offers, or arrange your own before you shop. Alpha390 Finance is a national broker, not a Cairns office, and we help Cairns buyers arrange car finance remotely. This guide explains how car finance works when you buy in Cairns, how dealer finance compares with a broker-arranged loan, what changes if you buy privately, and which documents and questions to have ready. It is general information, not a quote, and every lender applies its own criteria. For the main page, see our car finance overview.

Short answer: how do you get car finance in Cairns?
You can arrange car finance with a lender or broker before you choose a car, or accept the finance a dealer arranges at the point of sale. Moneysmart suggests comparing dealer finance with your own bank and other lenders, and asking who is involved and what fees apply before you sign. A broker can compare options from a panel of lenders, but approval is never guaranteed and depends on the lender and your circumstances.
Buying from a Cairns dealer
A dealership can arrange finance for you, which is convenient, but Moneysmart notes that dealer-arranged loans can involve several parties, such as a broker as well as the lender, and that fees can differ widely between providers. Before signing, compare the interest rate, the comparison rate (which combines rate and fees on the same amount and term), the establishment and ongoing fees, and any dealership or introducer fee. Ask for the full price of the car and the finance separately, so you can see what each costs.
Dealer finance or a broker-arranged loan?
| What to compare | Dealer-arranged finance | Broker-arranged finance |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Arranged at the dealership after you choose a car | Can be arranged before you shop, so you know your budget |
| Who is involved | Ask whether a broker or introducer is also involved | Broker and lender; ask how the broker is paid |
| Choice of lenders | Depends on who the dealer works with | Depends on the broker’s panel |
| What to ask | Comparison rate, all fees, any balloon | Comparison rate, all fees, any balloon |
Neither route is automatically cheaper. The offer in front of you decides, so compare the same amount and term side by side. Our guides on how BYD finance and Tesla finance offers compare with a broker-arranged loan show the same approach for brand offers.
Buying privately in Cairns
A private sale can work with finance, but there are extra steps. The Queensland Government says a used vehicle’s registration must be transferred within 14 days, the buyer lodges the transfer application, both parties sign it, and a current safety certificate is needed. The buyer pays the transfer fee and any vehicle registration duty, which is based on the higher of the sale price or the market value. Lenders usually want details of the vehicle and seller before they release funds, so talk to your broker or lender before you agree to buy. Our guide to car loans for a private sale explains how that works.
If the car is in another town or state
Regional buyers sometimes look beyond their local dealers for more choice. If you buy from outside Cairns, ask the lender and seller how payment, security and registration will be handled before you commit, and compare the total cost, including delivery, rather than only the advertised price. For other regional Queensland guides, see car finance in Townsville, on the Sunshine Coast and in Toowoomba.
What to have ready
- Photo ID and proof of address
- Recent income evidence, which depends on how you are paid (see car loans for casual workers)
- Details of your existing debts and monthly commitments
- Details of the car you plan to buy, once you have chosen it
Questions to ask before you sign
- What are the interest rate and the comparison rate for my amount and term?
- What are all the fees, including establishment, ongoing and early-payout fees?
- Is there a balloon payment, and can I afford it at the end?
- Who is paid by whom for arranging this loan?
Moneysmart explains that a balloon lowers repayments but generally increases the total cost, so only choose one if you are confident you can pay the final amount.
