Quick answer: Car finance on the Sunshine Coast is a loan, usually secured against the vehicle, repaid over an agreed term. Alpha390 is a broker, so one application is compared across a panel of lenders instead of a single dealer product. We assist with personal car loans, ABN and business vehicles, utes and vans, caravans and RVs, and boats. Approval is always subject to lender criteria.

From the beachfront apartments of Mooloolaba to the hinterland acreages behind Nambour and Maleny, the Sunshine Coast asks a lot of a vehicle. Locals commute along the Sunshine Motorway, tow caravans north and south on the Bruce Highway, and keep boats on trailers or in marinas. That mix of needs is why a single, dealer-arranged loan does not always fit. This guide explains how car and lifestyle vehicle finance works for Coast buyers, what lenders generally look at, and the practical steps to apply.

Who car finance suits on the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast region stretches from Caloundra in the south to Noosa in the north, with Maroochydore as the council seat and centres including Mooloolaba, Kawana, Buderim, Coolum, Nambour, Sippy Downs and Beerwah. Different Coast lifestyles tend to need different loans:
- Health, education and shift workers. Health and education are major local employers, including the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya and the University of the Sunshine Coast at Sippy Downs. Steady PAYG income in these fields often suits a standard personal car loan.
- Tourism, hospitality and events staff. Rosters and seasonal hours can vary, so lenders may look closely at how long you have been in the industry and how consistent your pay is over time.
- Tradies and small business owners. Sunshine Coast Council’s high value industries include tourism, health, education and professional services, and the council reports more than 31,000 registered businesses on the Coast (ABS, 2019), so plenty of locals are self-employed. If you work on an ABN, a business vehicle structure may suit better than a consumer loan.
- Lifestyle buyers. Caravans, campervans, boats and tow-capable utes are common purchases for people who live near the coast and want to use it.
Alpha390 is based in Underwood, Brisbane, and works with Sunshine Coast customers by phone and online, so you can apply from Maroochydore or Noosa without travelling. We have no Sunshine Coast branch, and we say so plainly.
How car finance works
Secured vs unsecured
A secured car loan uses the vehicle as security. Because the lender has something to fall back on, secured loans generally carry lower rates than unsecured ones and are the usual route for car purchases. An unsecured personal loan is not tied to the vehicle, which can help with older cars or private sales, but rates are typically higher.
Fixed vs variable rates
A fixed rate keeps your repayment the same for the term, which makes budgeting simpler. A variable rate can move up or down and may allow extra repayments more easily. Which is on offer depends on the lender and the loan type.
Balloon payments
A balloon is a lump sum due at the end of the term that lowers your regular repayments. It suits some buyers, but you need a plan to pay it out or refinance. Read our guide to balloon payment car loans before choosing one.
Reading a comparison rate
For consumer loans, lenders show a comparison rate next to the interest rate. It bundles the interest and most standard fees into one figure to help you compare like with like. Any rate you see is an example only and can change with the lender, the vehicle and your circumstances, so weigh fees and loan features as well as the headline number. Our explainer on car loan interest rates covers what sets your rate.
What lenders generally look at
Lenders assess your whole profile, not one number. In general they consider:
- Income and employment stability, including how long you have been in your job or business.
- Credit history shown on your credit report.
- Existing commitments such as loans, credit cards and living costs.
- Deposit, if any. Many lenders do not require one, and our page on no deposit car loans explains the trade-offs.
- The vehicle: age, kilometres and type can affect the terms offered.
To understand how much you may be able to borrow, see how much you can borrow for a car, and for timing, how long car finance approval takes.
If your credit history is not perfect
A past default or a thin credit file does not automatically close the door. Some specialist lenders look at your current income, stability and deposit alongside your history. No responsible lender or broker can promise approval, but a broker can point your application at lenders more likely to consider your situation. Start with our guide to bad credit car loan options.
Working on an ABN or self-employed
Sole traders and contractors are common across the Coast’s building, hospitality and services sectors. Lenders usually want to see how your income is documented, and your options depend on how long you have traded and what paperwork you hold. Our page on the ABN car loan explains the process, and chattel mortgage vs car loan compares the two common structures for business use.
Financing the Coast lifestyle
Many Sunshine Coast buyers are not just shopping for a daily driver. Some of the vehicles and assets we see people finance in this region include:
- Utes and tow vehicles. Dual-cab utes and 4WDs are popular for work and for towing boats and trailers. See ute finance, or van finance if you need a work van.
- Caravans and campervans. With the Bruce Highway linking the Coast to Brisbane and beyond, caravan and RV buying is a natural fit for touring. See caravan finance and campervan and RV loans.
- Boats and marine. Harbours such as Mooloolaba and the Noosa River waterways mean boats, jet skis and marine gear are part of everyday Coast life, and they are financed differently from a car. See boat and marine finance.
- Electric vehicles. If you are weighing an EV for the Motorway commute, see electric vehicle finance.

How to apply, step by step
- Set your budget. Decide a repayment you are comfortable with and allow for rego, insurance and running costs. The repayment calculator gives an estimate only, not a quote.
- Check your credit position. Knowing where you stand helps you apply with confidence.
- Gather your documents. Typically ID, proof of income (payslips, or business financials if you are self-employed) and details of your expenses.
- Apply online or call. Use the Alpha390 application form, or call 1300 390 390 to talk it through.
- Compare and choose. We compare options across our lender panel and explain fees, term and any balloon before you commit.
- Buy and settle. Once finance is approved, you complete the purchase and sort registration.
Buying a car on the Sunshine Coast
Coast buyers typically choose between franchise dealers, independent yards and private sellers. Dealers typically handle the transfer paperwork for you, while private sales put more of the process on you. If you would rather have someone hunt for a specific vehicle, our separate Sunshine Coast car deals service is a different offering from finance.
QLD safety certificate and registration transfer
In Queensland, a safety certificate is generally needed when registration is transferred to a new owner. The seller is responsible for obtaining it before disposing of a registered vehicle, other than to a dealer, and the certificate has a limited validity period. Exemptions apply, so check the Queensland Government’s page on safety certificates. As the buyer of a second-hand vehicle, you must transfer registration into your name within 14 days; see registration transfer.
Queensland also charges vehicle registration duty (commonly called stamp duty) when you register or transfer a vehicle. It can depend on the vehicle’s use and your circumstances, and the Government provides a calculator on its vehicle registration duty page. Build duty, transfer fees, CTP and insurance into your budget, because they sit on top of the purchase price.
Distance and driving
The Bruce Highway and the Sunshine Motorway are the main routes people use to reach and travel around the Coast, so many buyers cover long distances between home, work and the Brisbane region. If you commute south or tow regularly, kilometres and vehicle condition matter, and lenders may factor both into the vehicle you can finance.

Lending principles are broadly similar across Queensland. If you are comparing regions, read our guides to car finance on the Gold Coast, car finance in Toowoomba and car finance in Sydney.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get car finance on the Sunshine Coast?
Set a budget, check your credit position and gather ID, income and expense details. Then apply through a broker such as Alpha390, which compares options across a panel of lenders, or directly with a lender. Applications can be made online or by phone from anywhere on the Coast. Approval is subject to lender criteria.
Do I need to visit an office to apply?
No. Alpha390 is based in Underwood, Brisbane, and works with Sunshine Coast customers by phone and online. You can submit an application through our online form and speak with us by phone, so there is no need to travel from Noosa, Caloundra or Maroochydore just to start the process.
Can I get car finance on the Sunshine Coast with bad credit?
Possibly. Some specialist lenders consider your current income, stability and deposit alongside your credit history. A larger deposit and evidence of steady income can help. No lender or broker can guarantee approval, but a broker can point your application to lenders more likely to consider your circumstances.
Can I finance a ute, caravan or boat as well as a car?
Often, yes. Lenders offer finance for utes, vans, caravans, campervans and boats, though terms depend on the asset, its age and your profile. Rates and conditions differ from a standard car loan. Each asset has its own page on our site, and a broker can explain which structure suits your purchase.
I am self-employed on the Sunshine Coast. Can I still get a car loan?
Often, yes. Lenders look at how your income is documented and how long you have traded. Sole traders and ABN holders may be assessed differently from PAYG employees, and a business structure such as a chattel mortgage may suit a vehicle used for work. Approval is not guaranteed and depends on lender criteria.
Is a safety certificate required when buying a used car in Queensland?
Generally, a safety certificate is needed when registration transfers to a new owner, and the seller must obtain it before disposing of a registered vehicle, other than to a dealer. Exemptions exist and validity periods apply. Check the Queensland Government safety certificate page for the current rules before you buy.
What extra costs should I budget for when buying in Queensland?
Beyond the purchase price and repayments, budget for vehicle registration duty, registration transfer fees, CTP insurance, a safety certificate if needed, and comprehensive insurance. These sit on top of the loan and are not always in a finance quote. Buyers of second-hand vehicles must transfer registration within 14 days.
What is a comparison rate and should I rely on it?
For consumer loans, a comparison rate combines the interest rate and most standard fees into one figure, so loans can be compared like for like. It is a useful guide, but it does not replace reading the fees, term and features. Any rate shown is an example only and subject to change.
