How a Boat Loan Works

A boat loan is a secured loan used to buy a boat, with the boat itself typically held as security. It can be used for new or used vessels, including fishing boats, leisure boats and pontoons, yachts, sailing boats and, in some cases, engine upgrades or repowers. Alpha390 Finance is a broker, so we compare options from our lender panel Australia-wide rather than offering a single lender’s product.

Repayments are normally fixed over the term, and the boat is the asset the lender relies on if the loan cannot be repaid. Where a lender offers it, a balloon (residual) amount can be left to the end of the term to lower the regular repayment. For a comparison of rates and what affects them, see how to get the best boat loan rates. For the wider picture, start at our boat and marine finance hub.

A Boat Loan Example: How the Numbers Fit Together

This is a structure only, not a quote. Say you are buying a boat for $X and put down a deposit of $D. The amount financed is $X minus $D, plus any fees a lender allows to be added. From there, three levers decide the regular repayment:

  • Deposit: a larger deposit reduces the amount financed, which lowers the repayment and the interest paid over the term.
  • Term: a longer term lowers each repayment but usually increases the total interest paid.
  • Balloon or residual: if available, a balloon of $B deferred to the end lowers the regular repayment, but that amount must still be paid, refinanced or settled at the end.

The interest rate and fees depend on the lender, the boat and your circumstances, so they are not shown here. To see an estimate with your own figures, use our boat loan calculator. Results are estimates only and not a guaranteed quote or approval.

New vs Used Boat Loans

Both are commonly financed, but lenders look at them differently.

FactorNew boatUsed boat
Age and conditionGenerally not a limiting factorLenders often set limits on age at purchase and at the end of the term, and may want condition evidence
SecurityValue is usually clear from the purchase priceMay need a valuation or survey to confirm value
DepositOften a smaller deposit is workable for strong applicantsLenders may ask for a larger deposit as age increases
TermLonger terms are more commonly availableTerm may be shortened to suit the boat’s remaining life
Purchase typeDealer purchase is commonDealer or private sale; private sales may need extra checks on ownership and encumbrances

These are general patterns, not fixed rules, and each lender sets its own policy. For larger vessels see our yacht and marine loan options, and for upgrading an engine see boat repower loans.

What Lenders Typically Assess

Lenders usually look at the borrower and the boat together. Common points include:

  • Income and employment stability, and your ability to service the repayments.
  • Credit history and existing debts.
  • The size of your deposit.
  • The boat’s age, type, make and condition.
  • Whether the term is sensible for the life of the boat.
  • The valuation of the boat as security, and clear ownership.

Which of these matter most differs between lenders, which is where a broker can help match the application to a suitable lender.
